Kelly Taylor
Desert Meets the Sea is one of my most personal artworks.
I first painted this story more than ten years ago, but today it carries even greater meaning as my partner Trevor and I celebrate over 30 years together.
I come from Yankunytjatjara and Kokatha Country. Trevor comes from Wirangu and Narungga Country.
Raised in different parts of Country, with different family connections, stories and experiences, our paths crossed more than three decades ago and began a journey that continues today.
Over the years we have built a life together, raised a family, travelled across Country, faced challenges, celebrated achievements and created countless memories. This artwork represents the coming together of two worlds, the desert meeting the sea, two stories becoming one and two families united through love.
The large
throughout the painting represent our families coming together. The circular forms represent gathering places and important sites across Country, while the flowing pathways symbolise the journeys that connect our lives, our families and the landscapes that shaped us. The warm desert tones reflect my Yankunytjatjara and Kokatha Country, while the cool coastal blues honour Trevor's Wirangu and Narungga Country, together symbolising the meeting of the desert and the sea.
Painted in my contemporary Aboriginal style using professional-quality acrylic paints on gallery canvas, this artwork celebrates family, belonging and the enduring connections between people and Country.
When I look at this artwork today, I am reminded not only of where we both come from, but of everything we have shared together over the past thirty years. It honours the memories we have created, the challenges we have overcome, the family we have built and the legacy we continue to share through our children and grandchildren.
The artwork is hand signed by the artist and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
